The 2023 Cheshire Firefighter Challenge (CFC) welcomed 149 competitors hailing from six different countries - UK, Germany, New Zealand, USA, Austria, and Guernsey. Representatives from these countries competed on a virtual course and collectively raised an impressive £2,000.00 for The Fire Fighters Charity.
This year marked a significant milestone for the CFC as it opened its doors to fire staff, aiming to ensure inclusivity for all. Ten fire staff members, including three from Cheshire, took up the challenge. Moreover, the event continues to witness an increase in female firefighter participation, with 27% of this year's competitors being women.
Year after year, the competition compels participants to push their boundaries further. The fastest overall time was achieved by Arron Childs from Northamptonshire FRS, completing the course in 2 minutes and 26 seconds. However, the event also showcased newcomers who stepped up and pushed their own limits, such as Helen Brown from Greater Manchester FRS, who secured the fastest female time at 3 minutes and 29 seconds. Team relays were a notable aspect of the event, with the quickest team hailing from Mid and West Wales FRS, finishing with an impressive time of 2 minutes and 6 seconds. It was heartening to witness our very own HQ team, led by DCFO Lee Shears and including GM Duncan Palin, SM Marc Beechy, and CM Thomas Byrne, achieving a commendable time of 3 minutes and 4 seconds.
The Cheshire Firefighter Challenge continues to grow in popularity year by year, with an increasing number of competitors eager to participate. The event is set to return next year, with the CFC team planning to announce the 2024 dates early. If you're interested in getting involved, please contact CM Ryan Cook or TFSO Mark Pollard.
