On-call crews put to the test at Cholmondeley Castle

On Sunday 3 March, our on-call fire stations took part in Exercise Fortress at Cholmondeley Castle, a live operational exercise to test crews’ operational readiness in a challenging fire scenario.

The exercise simulated a basement fire with people reported as missing, crews had to put all their training, knowledge, and firefighting tactics into action.

A total of six fire engines, three Rapid Response Rescue Units (RRRUs), and one additional specialist vehicle attended the scene. We had 19 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus enter the basement of the castle giving them a valuable experience of firefighting in a unique environment.

Station Manager Kirsty Hornby said “This exercise was a great learning opportunity for all involved. Giving our on-call firefighters the exposure to live training exercises, as we do with our wholetime staff, is essential for our operational resilience. We want to extend our thanks to the Cholmondeley Castle Estate for their support in making this training possible and also thanks to our crews for taking part.
